Topical eye medication delays or prevents glaucoma in African Americans who have ocular hypertension, according to a study in the June issue of the Archives of Ophthalmology. The findings-that topical ocular hypotensive therapy had a prophylactic effect in African Americans and that with treatment the adjusted risks of glaucoma and blindness were comparable to the risks among other participants-were surprising, given that African Americans in the general population are approximately six times as likely to develop glaucoma as whites.
