Children undergoing gastrointestinal procedures require specialized care. Inherent differences in the emotional and physiologic care of the pediatric patient compared to the adult patient require nurses to have expanded skills. These variations encompass many areas such as sedation, fluid and airway management, intravenous access, and procedural instrumentation.

This optional session will focus on the care and management of the pediatric patient undergoing endoscopic procedures. Intravenous placement, sedation, airway management, and equipment needs will be addressed. Specific growth and developmental needs and interventions for pediatric patients will be discussed. The goal of this session is to enhance care and provide a positive procedural experience for the child in the gastrointestinal procedure unit.
