In adult patients, strictures of the esophagus most commonly occur from gastroesophageal reflux and malignancy. Esophageal strictures are much less common in children. Although they do occur in association with severe gastroesophageal reflux, there are a wide variety of conditions, congenital and acquired, that result in narrowing of the esophagus. Unlike adults, an inability to take food by mouth in early life may result in swallowing problems, food refusal, and behavioral issues. In this presentation, we describe our technique of aggressive management for esophageal narrowing in small children and how this impacts their ability to eat.
