Nursing research has shown Magnet Hospitals have low turnover and high staff satisfaction. Massachusetts General Hospital is the first Magnet Hospital in Massachusetts and has one of the largest endoscopy units in the country. The gastroenterology unit has 50 nurses, 29 physicians, and performs about 22,000 cases annually. The endoscopy unit was highlighted during the Magnet application process because of recruitment and retention strategies and the collaborative relationships among nurses and physicians. Many of these practices can be implemented in other endoscopy centers to promote excellence in gastroenterology nursing, thereby improving patient care.
