Dr Lester M. Crawford Nominated for Commissioner of FDA
Lester M. Crawford, DVM, has been nominated to be Commissioner of Food and Drugs at the Department of Health and Human Services, where he currently serves as Acting Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration. He previously served as Administrator of the Food Safety and Inspection Service as Deputy Commissioner of FDA. Earlier in his career, Dr Crawford was Director of the Center for Food and Nutrition Policy at Georgetown University and Virginia Tech. Dr Crawford is a Member of the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine (UK). He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Auburn University and his PhD in pharmacology from the University of Georgia, where he served as chair of the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology earlier in his career.
ILSI Annual Meeting Recognizes Movers and Shakers in Nutrition
Dorothy ("Dot") Lagg, MS, Senior Scientist at Masterfoods USA, was recognized at the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) 2005 Annual Meeting for her consistent contributions to improving the programs of various committees and working hard on the issues of obesity and carbohydrates as well as many other topics. Madeline Monaco, PhD, Director of Technology Research at Pfizer Inc, was also recognized for her efforts that led to a program in the area of Selfcare and Health program at ILSI.
The 2005 ILSI future leaders have also been named. These awards are given to outstanding young investigators in food, nutrition, and food safety. The awards recognized the contributions of Marie Pierre St. Onge, PhD, now of the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Wendy Ward, PhD, of the University of Toronto.
ILSI also recognized several scientists for their work during the prior years on various committees. They included Stuart Craig, PhD, Danisco Foods; Johanna Dwyer, DSc, Tufts University; Dorothy Lagg of Masterfoods USA; and Dan Skypeck at Kraft Foods. John Suttie, PhD, of the University of Wisconsin and Christine Williams, MD, MPH, of Columbia University, were honored for their roles to various ILSI committees.
ASNS Elects New Fellows
The American Society of Nutrition Sciences (ASNS) has elected 10 new Fellows to the Society. ASNS Fellows are scientists who have had distinguished careers in nutrition and are at least 65 years of age. The 2005 honorees, whom we heartily congratulate, include:

* Joseph (Joe) Hautvast, Emeritus Professor, Wageningen Agricultural University, and retired Director of the Wageningen Centre for Food Sciences, The Netherlands
* Peter Furst (sadly, Dr Furst died at the end of 2004). Dr Furst was internationally recognized for nutrition-related research particularly related to advances in enteral/parenteral nutrition and in the area of metabolic abnormalities and their nutritional implications in patients with renal disease.

IFT Appoints Food Science Expert
The Institute of Food Technologists has appointed Claudia Fajardo-Lira, PhD, as its latest Food Science Communicator to provide journalists with expert insight into food-related topics. She is an assistant professor of family and consumer sciences at California State University-Northridge.
EAB Member Cecilia Florencio Named to 2 FAO Panels
Cecilia Florencio, PhD, of the Nutrition Today editorial board, has been appointed as a member of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Panel of Eminent Experts on Ethics in Food and Agriculture. The panel advises the Director-General on ethical issues in food and agriculture. Major developments in food and agriculture, including accelerating technological advances, changes in the resource base, and evolving economic and market mechanisms, have brought up a variety of ethical questions. Dr Florencio is a member of the newly created World Health Organization (WHO) Virtual Network of Experts to assist in the implementation of the WHO's Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity Health on behalf of the Chronic Diseases and Health Information program. She has also written a book in her spare time!! Congratulations Cecilia!!
Highest Honor to William H. Foege, MD, MPH, Former Director of the CDC
The National Academy of Sciences has selected William H. ("Bill") Foege to receive its most prestigious award, the Public Welfare Medal. It honors extraordinary use of science for the public good. The Academy chose Foege for his dedication to eradicating global disease and his leadership in redefining the scope of public health policy in the United States.
An epidemiologist, Dr Foege is perhaps best known for his contributions to the successful global effort to eliminate smallpox. Early in his career, he traveled to Nigeria, where he worked to inoculate local populations against the disease. When faced with a critical vaccine shortage, Foege and his colleagues made the difficult decision to vaccinate only those they determined to be at greatest risk for infection-people in close contact with known victims. Later, as director of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) Smallpox Eradication Program, Foege demonstrated the effectiveness of this "ring vaccination" approach, which made it possible to vanquish smallpox in many countries in which as little as one half of the population had been immunized.
Foege was appointed Director of CDC, US Department of Health and Education and Welfare (now USDHHS) in 1977. After retiring from CDC in 1983, Foege helped found the Task Force for Child Survival and Development and served its director for 16 years. He joined the Carter Center in 1986 as executive director, Fellow for Health Policy, and executive director of its Global 2000 initiative and in 1999 he joined the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Now retired, Foege still works actively with both organizations, serving as an emeritus professor at Emory and is a Gates Fellow.
