Last year our director of nursing started what she called an exciting new program to get staff nurses motivated about continuing education (CE). We get points for every CE program we attend, article we read, course we take, certification we achieve, and so on. At the end of the year, the nurse with the most points gets a trip to Hawaii .
Some of us are busy with school or families and have little time to participate. This is causing resentment among staff nurses, and unit morale is suffering. I know that professional development is important, but is this approach fair to everyone? R.D., CALIF.
No, it's not. Besides family obligations, financial considerations will limit participation for many nurses. Who's paying for course tuition, program registration, travel, and so on? I doubt the hospital is footing the bill. If costs come out of each nurse's pocket, some nurses will have an unfair ...
