It was heartening to see "Nightingales Confront Tobacco Company, Redux" (June), but reading the article made me cringe. Ruth Malone was allowed to confront the tobacco company's board and shareholders because she is a shareholder. Isn't this a conflict of interest? The tobacco company executives are likely laughing all the way to the bank over this free publicity. I hope Malone will continue her fight but consider more effective strategies. There are many more subtle ways to make a statement. One possibility is to start a campaign that encourages medical and nursing offices across the nation to refuse to place in their waiting rooms magazines and publications that accept tobacco advertisements.
