I just read "A Modern Proposal" (Viewpoint, June). Service-credited retirement pensions are the strongest incentive for nursing recruitment that I've seen. Two years ago, when I was age 53, my hospital closed as the result of a merger, and I lost my job of 37 years. I currently work at a medical center at a federal prison. This amazing group of nurses opted for federal employment because of the early retirement option, and many will retire long before I do, despite being fairly young. I feel as if I'm the one serving a life sentence.
