EAB Member Berdanier Writes Another Great Book

Kudos to Nutrition Today Editorial Advisory Board Member, Carolyn Berdanier, on writing The CRC Desk Reference for Nutrition. The book concisely defines hundreds of terms used in nutrition science, providing quick answers to questions encountered by physicians, nurses, dietitians, physical therapists, pharmacists, and students in their day-to-day work and research. The desk reference includes key information on nutrition topics from additives to vitamins, which is alphabetized, summarized, tabulated, and illustrated. Editorial Advisory Board Member Dr Mary Story Leads Research Initiative on Promoting Healthy Eating and Preventing Obesity in Children

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) recently launched Healthy Eating Research, a $16 million new 5-year program, to determine effective changes in policies and environments that can promote healthy eating among children. It is a key component of RWJF's efforts to prevent childhood obesity. It will be directed by Mary Story, PhD, RD, professor in the division of epidemiology and community health at the University of Minnesota's School of Public Health and a Nutrition Today Editorial Advisory Board Member.

Healthy Eating Research builds and strengthens evidence needed to halt the epidemic of childhood obesity in the United States. Over the past 3 decades, rates of obesity in the United States have more than doubled among children aged 2 to 5 years and more than tripled among those aged 6 to 11 years.

The program funds research that identifies, analyzes, and evaluates environmental and policy approaches that can promote healthy eating and prevent obesity among children, particularly in low-income and racial/ethnic communities where childhood obesity is most prevalent. It complements RWJF's Active Living Research program on strategies to increase physical activity among all Americans.

In addition to Story, the program leadership team will include Robert W. Jeffery, PhD, and Leslie A. Lytle, PhD, RD, professors at the University of Minnesota's School of Public Health, and Karen M. Kaphingst, who will serve as deputy director. An expert advisory panel will be chaired by Shiriki Kumanyika, PhD, MPH, professor at the University of Pennsylvania.

The Healthy Eating Research Call for Proposals is available online at http://www.rwjf.org/cfp/her. Proposals are due March 7, 2006. Potential applicants should contact the program at (888) 635-7433 or visit http://www.healthyeatingresearch.org for more information.
