An American with HIV/AIDS who receives antiretroviral therapy can expect to live 24 years, researchers say. This figure more than doubles the average 10-year survival rate from the 1990s.

The average yearly cost for treatment is more than $25,000-40% more than yearly costs from the later 1990s. The estimated lifetime cost per patient is $618,000. Increases in both life expectancy and costs reflect widespread use of effective but expensive antiretroviral drugs.
