As a recently retired oncology nurse, I read with interest your article "Looking at Laryngeal Cancer" (May 2007), a topic not often covered in nursing journals. My 58-year-old brother was diagnosed with this cancer last year. He was very motivated to educate himself before he made a treatment decision. One of the most valuable tools he found was WebWhispers (http://www.webwhispers.org), an excellent online support group for patients who've had laryngectomies, with a good library of educational information. He also downloaded the E-triloquist computer program for his laptop (http://www.etriloquist.com) so he could have a voice until he found his own new voice.

He's done exceptionally well with his treatment, and he believes that educating himself preoperatively contributed greatly to his success.
