Thomson Healthcare's 100 Top Hospitals-2007. Thomson surveyed more than 3,000 hospitals and evaluated each according to eight criteria. Each was scored against other facilities that fell into similar categories. According to Modern Healthcare, recognized among teaching hospitals with 200 or more acute care beds were Rose Medical Center in Denver (which has spent three years on the list); Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado (six years on the list); and St. Luke's Boise Medical Center, in Boise, Idaho (five years on the list). Grouped among the large community hospitals with 250 or more acute care beds was Providence Everett Medical Center in Everett, Washington (four years on the list). Among the small community hospitals (those with 25 to 99 acute care beds) was Brigham City Community Hospital in Brigham City, Utah (three years on the list).

The Leapfrog Group was started by corporations and large employers interested in health care costs. The group surveyed almost 1,300 hospitals and evaluated them according to whether (as report by WebMD) they 1. have ICUs that are staffed by intensivists, 2. have computerized systems for entering physicians' orders, 3. perform certain procedures and care for certain high-risk neonates, and 4. have infection-control and error-reduction measures in place. Among the top 33 hospitals chosen was Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle.

US News and World Report, well known for its ranking of institutions, surveyed 5,462 medical centers, evaluating them according to 16 specialties. Eighteen facilities with the highest scores made its 2007 Honor Roll. University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle ranked number 11, with high marks in nine specialties.

Magnet Awards. As of April 2008, 22 facilities in the mountain states have received the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Magnet Award. Please see http://www.nursecredentialing.org/magnet/searchmagnet.cfm for each state.
