SECTION II

a.etonogestrel, average daily dosage: 0.120 mg; ethinyl estradiol, 0.015 mg

This contraceptive contains the estrogen ethinyl estradiol and progestin etonogestrel. The dosage is delivered through a flexible vaginal ring that remains in place for 3 weeks and is then removed. A new ring is inserted 1 week later. Warn the patient that it won't prevent sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV.

b.calcium citrate, 315 mg; vitamin D3 (as cholecalciferol), 200 international units

The caplet form of this combination is used to prevent osteoporosis. Supplemental calcium helps prevent bone loss, and vitamin D3 enhances absorption of calcium. Tell your patient to take one or two caplets twice a day, as directed.

c.lidocaine, 70 mg; tetracaine, 70 mg

This transdermal patch containing the local anesthetics lidocaine and tetracaine is used to provide local dermal analgesia on intact skin for superficial venous access and dermatologic procedures. Instruct your patient to avoid inadvertent trauma to the treated area.

d.brompheniramine maleate, 12 mg; pseudoephedrine HCl, 90 mg

Used to control allergy symptoms, this combination contains brompheniramine, a sedating antihistamine, and pseudoephedrine, a decongestant. Warn your patient that this combination may cause drowsiness and advise him to see how he feels before driving.

e.imipenem, 500 or 750 mg; cilastatin, 32 or 48 mg

Containing imipenem, a penicillin-like broad-spectrum antibiotic, and cilastatin, an enzyme inhibitor that prevents imipenem breakdown by renal enzymes, this combination must be prepared with 1% lidocaine (without epinephrine), agitated to form a suspension, and administered by deep I.M. injection into a large muscle. Be sure to use the preparation within 1 hour.
