Peru has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the Americas. For every 100,000 live births, 185 Peruvian women die, largely in poor, rural areas. The latest Amnesty International report finds a lack of coordination, monitoring, and accountability and recommends creating waiting houses where rural women can stay before birthing; promoting the vertical birthing method preferred by indigenous women; teaching health professionals to speak Quechua, the indigenous language of Peru; increasing emergency obstetric services; and providing contraceptives.
