I agree Lisa, nurses aren't perceived to be as important decision makers as doctors. But, it depends on the context. I'm from Bulgaria, and back home there is a medical office in every kindergarten, elementary school, and high school, with at least three nurses helping the students and teachers. For us, a nurse is perceived as an invaluable part of the school environment, and one of the most important decision makers in the life of a student.

I read another article about the survey you're referring to that talks about this at length:

www.healthleadersmedia.com/.../Can-Nurses-Drive-Health-Reform

I found this one through Abbie Citron's Twitter account -- it's definitely a hot topic, and it's good to see so many smart people discussing it. That's the reason you and Abbie are both on our 7 Must-Follow People for Nurses on Twitter article: careernumbers.com/.../7-must-follow-people-for-nurses-on-twitter

Keep up the good work!

Reports will show this or that but the TRUTH is when a patient or family member or for that matter a doctor needs help in an emergency they scream NURSE!! and we come instantly. The only thing I can compare it to is like when someone screams FIRE!! and help comes.

BE STRONG! BE PROUD! YOU'RE A NURSE!!
