Electronic Prescribing Online-Learning Tools Launched

American Medical Association tools will help physicians evaluate ePrescribing systems

THURSDAY, April 2 (HealthDay News) -- U.S. physicians will be able to better evaluate electronic prescribing systems thanks to a new online learning center on ePrescribing launched April 1 by the American Medical Association.

The learning center provides comprehensive information on the features and prices of the various ePrescribing system vendors, time savings and Medicare ePrescribing incentive payment calculators, and information on incentives offered under federal and state programs to switch to ePrescribing.

Frequently asked questions about the Medicare ePrescribing initiative are covered in the learning center's resources, and in addition to content exclusively for AMA members, there is information on ePrescribing that is freely available to all. Prescribing drugs electronically has several benefits, such as reduced risk of medication errors and drug interactions, according to an AMA statement.

"This new learning center will help physicians navigate through the ePrescribing adoption process so they can easily begin using this technology and prepare their practice for future technology like an electronic health record system," Joseph M. Heyman, M.D., AMA Board Chair, explained in a statement. "At the end of last year about 13 percent of physicians were prescribing electronically, but with the incentives available through Medicare's ePrescribing incentive program and this new AMA resource, I'm certain that percentage will increase."
