Venous thromboembolism rate is one in 100 for knee and one in 200 for hip arthroplasty
WEDNESDAY, Jan. 18 (HealthDay News) -- The rates of postoperative symptomatic venous thromboembolism (VTE) are 1.09 percent after total or partial knee arthroplasty (TPKA) and 0.53 percent after total or partial hip arthroplasty (TPHA), according to a review published in the Jan. 18 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Jean-Marie Januel, R.N., M.P.H., from the Lausanne University Hospital in Switzerland, and colleagues reviewed available literature to establish an estimate of symptomatic VTE rates prior to hospital discharge for patients undergoing TPHA or TPKA. A total of 47 studies, comprising 44,844 cases, were included.
The investigators found that the pooled rates of symptomatic postoperative VTE before hospital discharge were 1.09 and 0.53 percent for patients undergoing TPKA and TPHA, respectively. The pooled rates of symptomatic deep vein thrombosis were 0.63 and 0.26 percent for knee and hip arthroplasty, respectively. For pulmonary embolism, the pooled rates were 0.27 and 0.14 percent for knee and hip arthroplasty, respectively.
"Using current VTE prophylaxis, approximately one in every 100 patients undergoing TPKA and approximately one in every 200 patients undergoing TPHA develops symptomatic VTE prior to hospital discharge. These values could be used as a benchmark to evaluate patient safety indicators derived from routinely collected data," the authors write.
