Findings among women with normal androgenic status and without menstrual dysfunction
FRIDAY, June 10, 2016 (HealthDay News) -- About half of adult women with acne, with normal androgenic status, have elevated levels of 3 alpha-diol G, according to a study published online June 6 in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology.
Marisa G. Cunha, M.D., Ph.D., from the Faculty of Medicine of ABC in Santo André, Brazil, and colleagues assessed serum 3 alpha-androstanediol glucuronide levels through an enzymatic immunoassay method for a direct quantitative measurement. Levels were assessed in 26 patients with grade I and II acne, aged 13 to 50 years, with normal androgenic status and no menstrual dysfunction.
The researchers found that 83 percent of patients had grade II acne, and 60 percent of these patients were aged 14 years or over. Twelve of the patients had normal levels of serum 3 alpha-diol G, while 11 had increased levels, according to age.
"A total of 60 percent of adult women with acne present increased levels of androgens, and among those with normal levels and without menstrual dysfunctions, 50 percent show an increase in 3 alpha-diol G," the authors write. "Therefore, a pharmacological approach with anti-androgenic drugs for acne therapy in most of these patients is advisable."
