1.8 million cosmetic surgeries, 15.5 million minimally invasive procedures performed in 2015
FRIDAY, March 3, 2017 (HealthDay News) -- The number of cosmetic procedures in the United States rose 3 percent last year from 2015, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
According to the report, 1.8 million cosmetic surgeries and 15.5 million minimally invasive procedures were performed in the United States last year.
The most popular surgical procedures were the following: breast augmentation (up 4 percent from the year before to 290,467 procedures); liposuction (up 6 percent to 235,237); nose reshaping (up 2 percent to 223,018); eyelid surgery (up 2 percent to 209,020); and face-lifts (up 4 percent to 131,106). The top minimally invasive procedures were: botulinum toxin type A injections (up 4 percent to 7.0 million); soft tissue fillers (up 2 percent to 2.6 million); chemical peels (up 4 percent to 1.36 million); laser hair removal (down 1 percent, to 1.1 million); and microdermabrasion (down 3 percent to 775,000). The society also reported a 39 percent increase in labiaplasty, with more than 12,000 operations performed in 2016.
"A decade ago plastic surgeons might have seen a patient every seven to 10 years when they needed a major procedure like a face-lift or tummy tuck," Debra Johnson, M.D., president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, said in a society news release. "Now patients have ongoing relationships with their plastic surgeons and feel more comfortable discussing all areas of their body that they may be interested in rejuvenating."
