Abstract

Body image has traditionally been considered a female issue; consequently, scientific investigation of boys and body image is lacking. This review summarizes current original research including weight loss and weight gain issues pertaining to American boys and body image. We found that boys use diet, exercise, nutritional supplements, and drugs in potentially harmful ways to change weight. Specific demographic and psychosocial factors are related to body image, body satisfaction, and body-altering behaviors in boys. Greater understanding of boys' body image will aid dietetic, nutrition, and health professionals in counseling and establishing programming for boys on this important issue.
