InvasiveKlebsiella pneumoniaeinfections reported in California. Such infections are more commonly seen in Asia and are very rare in North America, write physicians in the September issue of Emerging Infectious Diseases. The authors described 13 patients diagnosed with invasive K. pneumoniae over the past five years at the Alameda County Medical Center in Oakland, California. Most were Asian but lived in the United States, nine were men, seven had diabetes, and seven had liver abscesses detected on computed tomography. Six patients had venous thrombotic complications, a "striking" observation not previously reported. The findings suggest an emerging type of K. pneumoniae that may be going unrecognized in North America.
