The new packaging configuration is designed to provide a more appropriate quantity for the treatment of chronic wounds, incorporate an applicator, and more easily dispense the required amount of product, according to the manufacturer. The company will continue to offer Altrazeal in 2-g and 5-g foil pouches.

Smith & Nephew, St Petersburg, Florida, has announced data from 2 independent clinical evaluations that indicate favorable results in preventing surgical site infections (SSIs) when using the PICO Negative-Pressure Wound Therapy System ("PICO") postoperatively following a cesarean delivery. One study was conducted on outcomes from a new postoperative strategy to manage cesarean deliveries in the Tacoma, Washington, area. Results indicated a more than 80% reduction in SSIs, according to the manufacturer. Another study in the United Kingdom followed 50 patients at higher risk for developing post-cesarean delivery SSI. This group had no infections and zero readmissions.
