More evidence that industry support leads to bias in clinical trials. It's not surprising that results of drug and medical-device trials influence decisions about prescribing, purchasing, and regulations. But with increasing frequency, drug and medical-device companies are sponsoring clinical research on their own products, which critics have suggested could lead to bias. To wit, a recent review of 48 papers published between 1986 and 2010 has found that industry-sponsored trials of drugs and devices "more often had favorable efficacy results[horizontal ellipsis] harms results[horizontal ellipsis] and overall conclusions" than studies without industry support. To improve transparency, the sponsorship of trials should always be listed, journals should require independent statistical analysis, and trial protocols and raw data should be posted on Web sites, suggest the authors in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (December 12, 2012).
