The cost of dementia in the United States in 2010 was $109 billion for purchased care, according to a report in the New England Journal of Medicine. When the value of informal care was included, that estimate rose to $159 billion to $215 billion. The researchers believe that, with the aging of the population, these costs will more than double by 2040 if prevalences and per-person costs remain the same.
