Preconference Workshops Offer Hands-on Education

Before the official start of the 28th annual Clinical Symposium on Advances in Skin & Wound Care at Disney's Contemporary Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, October 24-27, 2013, several preconference workshops will be held. These courses will allow attendees the opportunity for hands-on skill development, comprehensive clinical wound care management, and an in-depth wound care review course.

On Wednesday, October 23, 2013, the "Comprehensive Wound Care Review Course" will begin. Designed to help prepare wound care clinicians to successfully attain certification via any of the available examinations, the 1.5-day course is endorsed by the American Professional Wound Care Association (APWCA). The course continues for a full day on Thursday, October 24. Registrants for this course will automatically be registered for both days.

On October 24, 2013, 5 additional workshops will be presented. "Dermatology: Clinical Skills Lab" will provide clinicians with an explanation of various procedures with the opportunity to practice these skills. "Wound Debridement Skills Lab" combines didactic instruction with a hands-on practicum. "RAC and Ruin: How to Protect Yourself from Medicare Recoupment Programs" will address the most common cause of financial recoupment under the various programs, specifically establishing "medical necessity" for procedures such as debridement and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

In the workshop "Wound Care: Practice Principles," attendees will learn the basics of wound care, including wound assessments and classification of wounds, pressure ulcer staging, dressings, and various treatment options. The "Lymphedema Workshop" will discuss comprehensive management of complex lymphedema, including dermatological issues, odor, exudate, and infection control for open wounds, scar, and fibrosis management along with patient rehabilitation needs.
