    You don't have to be a nurse to recognize many of the physical changes that accompany aging. But as a nurse, you do need to be able to tell which changes are normal and which may signal a serious problem. In this article, I'll explain how aging affects body systems and tell you how to recognize pathologic changes.

    It starts with the cell

    In physiologic terms, aging can be defined as accumulated damage to the body over time that isn't repaired or regenerated. It starts as the cells lose their ability to repair DNA, leaving them vulnerable to mutation, injury, malfunction, and death. As cell function declines, compensatory mechanisms such as hypertrophy and hyperplasia cause significant changes throughout the body. In some cases, your assessment of one body system may uncover problems in another.

    The brain

    Over time, the brain atrophies and the older person's movements and reflexes slow down.
