FIGURE Ted Kennedy, Jr, will bring his message of advocacy for people with disabilities to the 16th Annual Clinical Symposium on Advances in Skin & Wound Care, September 20-23, 2001, at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort Hotel in Orlando, FL. As the conference's celebrity guest lecturer, Kennedy will speak on Thursday, September 20. His lecture will immediately precede the grand opening of the exhibit hall.
Kennedy lost a leg to bone cancer in 1973 at the age of 12. Since then, he has devoted much of his energy to advocating for the civil rights of people with disabilities. He has held various positions in this area, including being named by Connecticut Gov John Rowland to serve on the board of that state's Office of Protection and Advocacy for Persons with Disabilities. He is also a member of the advisory board for CanDo.com, a Web site that helps people with disabilities find solutions to everyday problems.
Kennedy graduated from Wesleyan University in 1984, and in 1991, he earned a Master's degree from Yale University's School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. He is currently focused on studying environmental factors that may lead to disease and disability, and he has been working with the research faculty of Yale University School of Medicine since 1992. He is also director of the New Haven Lead Safe Home and Community Health Project, a community-based initiative addressing pediatric lead poisoning, a known cause of mental disability.
In January 1997, Kennedy received his juris doctorate degree from the University of Connecticut School of Law. He now specializes in health law and disability law for the New Haven, CT, firm of Wiggin & Dana.

The Sharon Baranoski Founder's Award-given annually at the Clinical Symposium on Advances in Skin & Wound Care-honors overall pursuit of excellence in the field of skin and wound care. Past winners include Barbara Bates-Jensen, PhD, RN, CWOCN; Rita Frantz, PhD, RN, FAAN; Janet Cuddigan, PhD, RN, CWCN; and Luther Kloth, MS, PT, CWS.
Nominees are being sought for the 2001 award; deadline for submitting a name for consideration is July 1. The award will be announced at the Clinical Symposium.
The award, which honors Sharon Baranoski, MSN, RN, CWOCN, founder and symposium director, is supported by an unrestricted educational grant from 3M Health Care.

Call for Abstracts
Oral and poster abstracts on all aspects of skin and wound care are being sought for presentation at this year's Clinical Symposium. Deadline for submission is July 1, 2001, with notification of acceptance or rejection by July 15.
Oral and poster abstracts should address subjects of interest to skin and wound care clinicians. Topics can include, but are not limited to, clinical research, case studies, treatment modalities, wound classification, laboratory research, treatment protocols, education, and team building.
