Dr. Gary D. Hales, former Editor-in-Chief of Computers in Nursing, was honored recently at the 33rd Biennial Convention of Sigma Theta Tau International, Honor Society of Nursing, held in Detroit, Michigan. On Saturday, November 4, Gary was presented with a special posthumous "International Multimedia Image Maker Award" for exceptional contributions to nursing. Current Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Leslie Nicoll, accepted the award on Gary's behalf. On Sunday, November 5, Gary was inducted as an honorary member into Sigma Theta Tau International. Honorary membership is bestowed upon those who have gained recognition in nursing or in any field contributing to nursing and who demonstrate a commitment to the ideals, purposes, and concerns of nursing as well as superior achievement to the ideals, purposes, and concerns of nursing as well as superior achievement and leadership in their chosen fields. Dr. Lois Allen, a close friend of Gary's and former member of the Editorial Board of Computers in Nursing accepted the honorary membership on Gary's behalf. In her remarks after Gary's induction, Lois described how Gary embodied the principles of Sigma Theta Tau-love, courage, and honor-through his many friends, his contributions to nursing, and his contributions to psychology. Her comment, "Gary faced death with more courage than many of us face life," was profoundly moving for many in the audience. More than 1800 Sigma Theta Tau members and friends attended the convention and many of Gary's friends, including Dr. Patti Brennan, Dr. Mary Ann Rizzolo, and Dr. Diana Skiba were present for the awards ceremonies.
