I've recently become certified in my specialty, geriatric nursing. The hospital where I work offers a pay differential for nurses earning a BSN degree, but not for those earning specialty certification. I'm thinking about asking for a raise in recognition of my certification anyway. What do you say?—J.D., MO.

We say go for it! Your hospital isn't the only one that doesn't automatically give raises for certification, but that shouldn't stop you from trying to get a pay increase for an achievement that benefits your patients (and employer) as well as you.
