    Along with proper nutrition and exercise, you need enough sleep to feel your best—generally 7 to 8 hours a night for an adult. During sleep, your body stores your day's learning into memory and improves your ability to absorb and retain everyday skills. A good night's sleep also reenergizes you for the day ahead.

    If you don't get enough sleep, your life can become more stressful and you may be less productive. When sleep deprivation is chronic, you accumulate a sleep debt, so concentrating is difficult and you're more likely to make mistakes that endanger you and others—such as dozing off while you're driving. Even drifting off while you're watching TV means your body is trying to catch up on sleep.
