An interactive and fun classroom activity can help faculty learn the students' names while setting the tone for the rest of the semester. Integrating a "selfie-starter" on the first day of class is a new take on traditional ice breakers and a great way for the teacher to learn students' names and obtain their contact information. A "selfie-starter" requires students to write their name on a piece of paper or cardstock and have a nearby student take their photo (with their approval) using their smartphone while holding their name card. The students can then send their individual picture to the faculty member via text message or email, depending on the educator's preference. When students share their picture via text message, the faculty member will be able to see who is sending the message without saving any of the students' numbers to their phone. Simply, scroll to the top of the messages, and the student's image will be there. Faculty can then print out the pictures and use them to learn each student's name or take attendance rather than using a sign in sheet or calling out student names at the beginning of class. Incorporating a "selfie-starter" on the first day of class can help to make students feel welcome, meet new classmates, and stimulate excitement for future classes.
