When the oncology nurse-manager resigned, I was asked to take charge of the unit until a new manager was hired. I was given the title charge nurse and a small pay raise. I then applied for the vacant position and got the job within a few days. It took me a few weeks to realize that, although I do exactly the same work as every other nursemanager at this hospital, my job title and pay grade were never changed. When I confronted the director of nursing about this, she said human resources had decided that because oncology is a small unit, my position would be kept at the charge nurse level .
