MYTH: Autism is a rare childhood disorder .
FACT: Autism spectrum disorders (ASD), which include autism and Asperger's syndrome, are more common than such familiar childhood problems as diabetes and Down's syndrome, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. The prevalence of ASD is an estimated 1 to 6 children per 1,000. Boys are four times more likely to have autism than girls.
MYTH: ASD is a type of mental retardation .
FACT: ASD is classified as a pervasive developmental disorder. Although signs and symptoms vary widely among individuals, common traits include an inability to relate to others, difficulty communicating verbally or nonverbally, and repetitive motions or behaviors.
