Abstract

Dietitians and nutrition professionals are frequently involved in the care of persons with identified genetic diseases thought to have a genetic/nutritional component. The Human Genome Education Model Project II conducted the first national survey of emerging issues in genetics for health professionals, including 600 dietitians. The purpose of the survey was (1) to determine needs, opinions, experiences, and knowledge of the Human Genome Project and current issues in human genetics and (2) to identify priority topics for education in human genetics. The survey found that genetics services, educational background, and professional activities were similar for dietitians as compared to social workers, psychologists, occupational and physical therapists, and speech-language pathologists.
