    If extended-release morphine (Avinza) capsules are prescribed for your patient, instruct her to swallow them whole. These capsules contain both immediate-release and sustained-release morphine beads to provide 24-hour relief for moderate to severe pain. Crushing or chewing the capsule could rapidly release a fatal dose.

    Figure. No caption available. For patients who can't swallow the capsule, the manufacturer suggests two alternatives. Instructions for administering the drug in applesauce appear in the package insert. For written instructions on administration through a gastrostomy tube, call 1-888-8avinza. Administration through a nasogastric tube isn't recommended because the drug could clog the tube.
