In "Urinary Tract Infection: Draining Question" (Advice, p.r.n., March 2005), a nurse asked how to position and manage a urinary drainage system for a patient who needs a low bed because he's at risk for falls. How can you position the bag low enough to maintain gravity flow without allowing it to touch the floor and become contaminated?

I'm a quality control manager in a long-term acute care facility where we also struggled with this issue. We solved it with a vinyl cover that you can slide over the drainage bag. With the cover protecting the bag from the floor, you can position the bag just about anywhere on the bed. The product is called the Posey Urine Drainage Bag Cover (vinyl), and it's available from the J.T. Posey Company in Arcadia, Calif.
