  • YOU MAY INSERT a nasogastric tube in an adult to administer tube feedings and medications, remove and suction stomach contents, or lavage his stomach.

    * Verify the order, including the type and size of the nasogastric tube and whether it will be attached to suction.

    * Check the patient's history for nasal surgery or presence of a deviated nasal septum. Assess his level of consciousness and ability to cooperate, then perform a baseline abdominal assessment.

    * Provide privacy, perform hand hygiene, and put on clean gloves.
