Celebrating a Milestone

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Clinical Symposium on Advances in Skin & Wound Care, to be held October 23-26, 2005, at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, NV. The multidisciplinary planning panel, headed by Symposium Director Sharon Baranoski, MSN, RN, CWOCN, APN, DAPWCA, FAAN, and Course Director Richard "Sal" Salcido, MD, has put together an outstanding lineup of experts in the wound care community to address a variety of thought-provoking topics of interest to skin and wound care clinicians.

Keith Harding, MB, ChB, MRCGP, FRCS, will kick off the conference with his lecture, "20 Years in Wound Care: Where We've Been, Where We're Going." Dr Harding is Professor of Reha-bilitation Medicine (Wound Healing) and Head of the University Department of Surgery, Cardiff University, Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom.

According to Dr Harding, the past 20 years have seen enormous progress in wound care, but also a large number of false dawns. Despite these problems, he foresees a rosy future: He believes that over the next 20 years, there will be enormous opportunities for advances in research, clinical practice, and the organization of wound care globally. In his lecture, Dr Harding will reflect on the profession's recent experience to help attendees understand how to avoid repeating the mistakes that have been made and how to maximize the opportunities that will be presented in the coming years.

In the closing address, "Wound Culturing: Benefits and Controversies," Dr Harding will be joined by George Rodeheaver, PhD, University of Virginia Medical Center, School of Medicine, Plastic Surgery Research, Charlottesville, VA.

Infection in wounds remains an enormous challenge for many clinicians. One of the problems is the lack of agreement on various aspects of diagnosing and treating infection. Drs Harding and Rodeheaver will discuss this issue, including its impact on professional credibility and responsibility. They will also identify the questions that need to be addressed to improve understanding and knowledge of clinical practice in managing patients with wound infection.
