Abstract

TRANSDERMAL FENTANYL, or the fentanyl patch, is commonly prescribed for patients with cancer pain or moderate to severe chronic, persistent pain. Because it's costly, some practitioners limit the use of transdermal fentanyl to patients who can't take oral pain medications. But compared with oral medications, transdermal fentanyl provides a better level of pain control with fewer variations in serum drug levels. Convenient to use, a patch provides continuous analgesia for 72 hours.
