Preconference Sessions Highlight Clinical Skills

Four intensive preconference sessions are on tap for the 20th Anniversary Clinical Symposium on Advances in Skin & Wound Care, October 23 to October 26, 2005, in Las Vegas, NV. All 4 sessions will take place on Sunday, October 23.

The "WOC Review Course," a perennial favorite with attendees, will review the full scope of wound, ostomy, and continence (WOC) clinical practice. Topics will include urinary and fecal incontinence, wounds, fistulas, and ostomy surgery and peri-surgery care. This full-day session is intended as a brief preparatory course for WOC nurses who are sitting for certification. The faculty includes Mikel Gray, PhD, CUNP, CCCN, FAAN; Dorothy Doughty, MN, RN, CWOCN, FAAN; and Paula Erwin-Toth, MSN, RN, CWOCN, CNS.

James McGuire, DPM, FAPWCA, and Lawrence A. Lavery, DPM, MPH, will address "Total Contact Casting vs Ankle Foot Orthoses." They will review the evidence for all forms of off-loading devices, including indications for their use, and they will demonstrate techniques for fashioning a variety of devices, such as the total contact cast, the modified Carville healing sandal, felted foam, and the removable orthotic walker. Participants will have an opportunity to practice several techniques for transforming a removable orthotic walker into a nonremovable device, and they will apply and remove a total contact cast. This full-day session is limited to 50 participants.

In the "Wound Academy: Practice Principles" workshop, the faculty will focus on the survival skills needed for everyday practice. This full-day session will address practice principles, treatment options, and each of the high-risk areas of ulcer management. Faculty for this session includes Sharon Baranoski, MSN, RN, CWOCN, APN, DAPWCA, FAAN; Joann Maklebust, MSN, RN, CS; Steven R. Kravitz, DPM, FAPWCA, FACFAS; Cathy Thomas Hess, BSN, RN, CWOCN; Chris Barkauskas, BS, RN, CWOCN, APN; Linda Galvan, BSN, RN, CWOCN, APN; Andrea McIntosh, BSN, RN, CWOCN, APN; and Mary Sieggreen, APRN,BC, CVN.

The final preconference session, "Sharpen Your Debridement Skills," will combine a lecture and hands-on experience. Presented by Pamela Scarborough, MS, PT, CDE, CWS, and Greg Patterson, MD, this half-day session will review the 4 major types of debridement used to clean the wound bed of necrotic tissue: autolytic, enzymatic, mechanical, and sharp. Participants will have an opportunity to perform sharp debridement on an animal specimen (a pork hock) to become familiar with the use of sharp instruments on simulated wounds. The lecture will focus on the indications and contraindications for sharp debridement, and it will include important considerations for patient selection. The session will be presented in the morning, and then repeated in the afternoon. Attendance is limited to 75 participants in each session.
