Abstract

When a 71-year-old man with a history of chronic liver disease and hepatic encephalopathy was hospitalized for lethargy, a gastroenterologist ordered “rifaximin 400 mg per nasogastric tube TID.” This antibiotic, approved for traveler's diarrhea, is also used to prevent hepatic encephalopathy in patients with liver cirrhosis.
