Abstract

 The hospital where I work recently laid off its telemetry technicians and assigned certain RNs to wear beepers that sound if a patient develops an arrhythmia. The beepers go off frequently but don't identify the cardiac rhythm. When we go to check, most of the “arrhythmias” are false alarms. Other patients suffer when the beepers waken them and when the nurse has to leave to respond to an alarm.
