Abstract

In a large study sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health, the first-generation antipsychotic perphenazine (Trilafon) performed as well as newer, more expensive drugs in treating schizophrenia. A total of 1,493 patients with schizophrenia were assigned to receive one of five drugs: perphenazine, olanzapine (Zyprexa), quetiapine (Seroquel), risperidone (Risperdal), or ziprasidone (Geodon) for an 18-month study period. The researchers found that perphenazine was as effective at treating schizophrenia as the other four drugs.
