Abstract

During a code, our hospital policy requires a nurse or a chaplain to escort family to a waiting area and stay with them. Last week a 42-year-old patient with pancreatic cancer coded in my unit. Although terminally ill, he'd refused a do-not-resuscitate order because he said he wasn't ready to give up.
