Abstract

Many Americans are attempting to lose weight and will eagerly adopt any method that is purported to increase weight loss. For many of these quick, weight loss plans, the underlying science has not been tested in clinically, controlled trials or reported in peer-reviewed journals. Without the test of science, these methods should be viewed with great skepticism. Currently, there are several nontraditional, nutritional methods that have been subjected to the rigors of randomized, controlled trials and publication in recognized journals. These methods including meal replacements, low-carbohydrate diets, glycemic index, high-calcium diets, and the Internet for transmitting dietary advice are discussed. Incorporating any of the nontraditional approaches into weight loss plans for patients requires the critical thinking skills of dietitians.
