Abstract

Data competence is an essential component of nursing practice. Through the application of both theoretical and practical knowledge, data competence enables the practitioner to develop a framework of practice that focuses on patient safety and positive outcomes. Marie T. Nolan, DNSc, RN, Director of DNSc Program at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, an assistant professor at Hopkins School of Nursing, and author of "Improving Patient Care Through Data Competence," has developed several hypothetical cases that directly apply the in-depth use of data competence to everyday nursing practice. After reviewing and studying Nolan's composition, it is clearly evident that the application of data competence is beneficial in any setting, including the military healthcare environment.
