Abstract

Prediabetes, a precursor to type 2 diabetes mellitus, is defined as the presence of impaired fasting glucose and/or impaired glucose tolerance. Evidence has emerged showing that type 2 diabetes mellitus can be prevented or delayed with diet and lifestyle modification. Incorporating the most effective proportion of macronutrients into dietary patterns will positively influence the overall health and quality of life of persons with prediabetes. In addition, weight management strategies must be addressed in the context of complex glucose regulation and dyslipidemia issues. Nutrition professionals perform a vital role in disseminating effective dietary management strategies to reduce overall morbidity and mortality among persons with prediabetes.
