CHILDHOOD AMBITION

To be the Good Humor Ice Cream man: driving around in a white truck, wearing that pressed white uniform, ringing a bell, and giving out (and eating!!) ice cream.

 

FONDEST MEMORY

As a child, my grandmother, who was a nurse, soothing my sunburned back with Sea Breeze, an astringent that includes witch-hazel and eucalyptus.

 

FAVORITE MUSIC

The soundtrack to Baraka, which includes recordings of Tibetan monks at the Dip Tse Chok Ling Monastery (see Favorite Movie).

 

WILDEST DREAM

Living on a sustainable organic farm in Costa Rica, nurturing a small retreat and educational center, and growing produce for local consumption.

 

PROUDEST MOMENT

Watching my 12-year-old daughter play the lead in Peter Pan for Florida State University's summer production.

 

FIRST NURSING JOB

Oncologic primary care at the University of Utah.

 

INDULGENCE

Watching Ed Wood videos.

 

INSPIRATION

Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching.

 

SCARIEST MOMENT

Slipping and falling while climbing in the foothills of the Flatiron Mountains outside Boulder, Colorado. I was stranded on a ledge while the rest of the group could not hear my calls. I climbed down alone, with a severely sprained ankle.

 

BEST VACATION

A six-week guided tour of Ayurvedic hospitals and erotic temples of India, with a side journey to the back country.

 

FAVORITE MOVIE

Baraka, which portrays a journey through six continents. It has no plot, no actors, no script. Baraka is an ancient Sufi word, which can be translated as "a blessing" or "the essence of life."

 

FAVORITE FOOD

My mother's spatzle. Literally translated from German as "little sparrow," spatzle are tiny noodles made with flour, eggs, water or milk, salt, and sometimes nutmeg.

 

DREAM VACATION

A tour of the gardens of Morocco with horseback trek through Berber country.
