Abstract

Herbal supplements are customarily used by Hispanics in the United States. The safety of the herbs most available to Hispanic consumers in Southeast Idaho was considered along with the herbal remedies and the related folk literature in Spanish. The literature did not supply any information about recommended dosage, duration of treatment, or significant side effects. The remedies were intended for self-treatment for a variety of medical conditions. Out of 18 popular herbs, 4 (chamomile, linden, rue, and mullein) were closely examined, and compared with those in the scientific literature.
