Abstract

Millions of people each year in the United States contract a rhinovirus that results in the common cold and all of its concomitant symptoms. Many supplements are currently used by individuals with the belief that these substances will either prevent the common cold or reduce its symptoms. Zinc is promoted to cure or significantly reduce symptoms and is sold as a component of lozenges and intranasal sprays. The purpose of this article is to provide a review of the clinical evidence that has been conducted regarding the use of zinc lozenges and zinc nasal sprays available for sale in the United States.
